Story

I've come a long way since 1990! It's taken me this long to finally realize that.

In 1990, I was driving an 18 wheeler; making a good living. I was happily married, and buying a nice home.

April 1990, I was diagnosed as having Serere Glaucoma. The Glaucoma Specialist told me that I had been legally blind more than a year. A few months before that April, I had seen a different Ophthalmologist; I knew I was having some kind of eye problem. The Ophthalmologist said it was just eye strain. So I blamed the poor eye sight on my glasses. After all, I was driving an 18 wheeler with no problems, or I should say, not many!

In 1991, I lost my license, three years later my wife left. I couldn't keep the house payment up, and lost that too. At first I was in shock, bewilderment. Then my attitude turned to anger, and self pity.

In 1996, Commission for the Blind sent me to a rehab center, to learn how to cope with this disability. I found others just like me, some with a worse condition than I. We all hung together though, and slowly we recovered our self confidence. The rehab center kept us busy. Among other things I learned how to type, and use a computer, which opened up a whole new life for me.

One day as I was surfing the net I stumbled into WAPD chat group. I was amazed with the people there! So many different kinds of disabilities. I didn't see any anger, or harsh words, no self pity! You guys always have a kind word to say; it's like a big happy family. In the chat room I see pain, inspiration, faith, hopes/dreams, abilities not-disabilities, and courage to fight the good fight and never give up!

At present time, I'm taking baby steps, but one day I'll be up there with you guys ... helping someone that's on the verge of giving up!
