I am the author of Snapshots, A Rare Look at Childhood Trauma and Abuse, by Kimbra Martin (1999, Authorlink Press, ISBN 1928704018), a book that narrates my own survival story and which has received critical recognition in several US medical and psychological organizations. I have found in my public discussions of Snapshots, and in radio and television interviews, that the book has made it possible for silent survivors to speak up. I believe it is because I was quite honest in my writing and did not sugar-coat the truths of abuse and recovery.

"We were taught to hide so many things. Our anger. Our pain. Our fear. Our grief. Where did they go? "There is a graveyard in the back yard of our old house. In it are hidden the bones of the animals we could not keep. Kid goats, males, that my father thought too poor for breeding stock. The dogs and cats deemed nuisances. All killed with a bullet to the head. It was a fate I always worried I would share.
"I used to see my mother, watering the grass on top of all the animals. It was a strange act of nurturing.
"The grass grew thick and green above the graves, and just across the sidewalk, the lawn did not thrive. It was not until I was grown that I realized why.
"I used to imagine a graveyard deep inside of me. I thought that might be where I put all those feelings I was not allowed to voice. Little graves, some fresh, some old. At the worst of times, which are far fewer now, I am a grieving caretaker, and it is all I can do to keep my voice level, my tears at bay. I am only just learning how to let them go.
"I am not good at this, but I try. Someday, I am optimistic, they will pale to transparencies, and I will find my peace."

What is the effect of child abuse on survivors? How does a child transcend trauma to grow into a functioning, stable adult? While good information is available through a number of child welfare and mental health organizations, the clearest answers may well come from the voice of the survivor.

As she grows, so does the abuse. But through it all, her sense of herself survives. She gathers the nerve to tell a friend, exposing the welts on her legs, and the facial bruises she has learned to cover with makeup.
An older brother, who finally leaves the home, gives her the inspiration to do the same. Running away to a schoolmate's family may be the only thing that can save her life.
"I really do believe in angels," Cassandra says of the family that took her into their home. "They are of this world. Not what one would expect, from fairy tales and movies and books. There are no wings, no halos, no outward signs. They look like ordinary people, but angels they are."
After years of struggling with her own identity, Cassandra gains the strength to face the abusive parents she left, seeing them as somehow smaller than they were. But her father hasn't changed.
"If you ever come around here again, I'll kill you!" These are the last words she remembers hearing from him as she drove away.
The hardest thing she has to do is to say good-bye, forever, to her mother. "I did not fully comprehend her. But I loved her."
Cassandra becomes the voice for every child confronted with abuse. "You can cry without a sound," she says, "and the silence tells the truth."
But in the end, SNAPSHOTS leaves readers with the courage to pick a point in their lives and say, "This is the beginning. This is where I start."
