My friend, Carolyn, and I were just discussing this topic the other day. She has recently lost a daughter to CF and was saying how her daughter fought the term handicapped and disabled all of her short life.
Carolyn said to me, "You would have liked my daughter; you two have the same spirit, the same fight." And it's true I probably would have liked her daughter because I like what I've heard about her.
I'm a person first and foremost. You can call me a survivor -- I guess I am having been born blind and having come through society relatively unscathed -- oh a few war wounds, mostly small but in that I'm lucky I guess and a survivor.
I do have a disability -- actually a few -- but the primary one is blindness. Tthe others are related to my ostomy, but they have become no more significant to me than other characteristics that define my personality -- like I have blue eyes, wear glasses, am chubby, have short blond hair, a wicked wit and a curious nature. All parts of me that define me as a whole person. Society may not see me as a whole person, but I certainly do.
And for those of you who think, "Oh, she's trying to pass as non disabled" -- never in a moment would I try that. I didn't always celebrate my disability, but I certainly didn't deny it either. I was never one for the cutesy, politically correct names, either -- like physically challenged. I know a lot of perfectly non disabled persons who are klutzes and that's what physically challenged means to me. I'm not differently abled either -- well, I am -- but if you're alive and breathing, so are we all. We all are unique; we all have different abilities, so that one is a no go, too.
Handicapable, I kind of like this one, but most people mis-hear it and think you're saying handicapped, a term which I despise and I will spend the rest of my natural life trying eradicate it from the vernacular. Saying one is handicapped is like putting up an eight foot barrier in front of you -- it defines you as being less than you are on your terms or someone else's. Since this my life, I think I must choose how I define myself and handicapped I'm not.
I didn't used to mind the term disabled either, until they started using it in traffic reports, describing cars who were blocking traffic and needed to be hauled away and repaired. Banish that term, nobody's hauling me anywhere unless I want to go.
My friends dispute the term legally blind, one says I can see better than she does and she drives. That's a scary thought to me but on some days she 's absolutely right -- I do see more than she does. They like visually impaired; I'm beginning to lean toward the low vision because that pretty well describes what I have.
So how do I define and refine myself? I am a person first, who has low vision, wears an ostomy, wears glasses, is blond, middle aged, has blue eyes, a wicked wit, a curious nature, is educated and becoming a wise woman as she matures and I'm nobody's victim of anything!
