I am a retired nurse with two grandchildren and raising an adopted 11 year old child with cerebral palsy and seizures as a single parent.
My adopted daughter spent 10 and one half years in her natural home where she spent 16 to 24 hours in bed. She had been given up as retarded and was thought to never be able to do anything.
I have had her for six months, and she has had three surgeries and will still have surgery on her hands and arms in late May or early June. She weighed 42 pounds when I got her and now weighs 70 pounds. She has begun walking with a walker and can sit alone for short periods and holds her head up all the time -- which she was unable to do when I got her. She uses whole language to communicate her needs and is quite good at this. She can be manipulative, faking a cry, kissing, or quick scream to get her way. She is a happy child who is the light of my life.
Our school doesn't have a program she fits into, so she is homeschooled at this time. I administer at least a total of 8 hours of combined therapy daily. She has speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy daily at home . We drive 142 miles once a week for physical therapy. It's hard to get anything else done around the house until she is in bed for the night. Fortunately she now sleeps all night. When I first had her she slept at intervals at night and screamed at intervals all night. She has been sleeping all night for a little over a month and it is a real blessing.
I also provide respite care for another child with seizures and CP. She is unable to do anything except stand for transfers and has a lot of tone, making transfers difficult. She is 18. I have had to cut down on the amount of time I can provide for respite care for her. I felt bad for the parents.
I'd like parents to know to never give up and don't accept that just because you have been told your child can't do anything to keep fighting for their child. There is no real perfect way to test the child's thinking processes when that child doesn't speak.
Also I know that without the Lord's help my daughter, Alicia, would not be doing this well. It ticks me off when a neighbor comes over and says in front of my child, "Isn't it a pity!" How would you like to be handed something like that after giving birth.
It ticks me off that the schools lump these children together and don't expect them to achieve anything and therefore spend their time primarily entertaining them or mainstreaming them so they sit in a class listening and watching without actively participating.
My daughter's IEP goals were ambulating and some form of communicating her needs. She was only allotted one half hour of ,physical, speech, O.T.therapy per week! She spent 55 and one-half hours in her wheel chair. They cooked mac and cheese in the classroom, and she was to go to guidance. That would not have produced a walking child. She cried when they wouldn't allow her to practice standing, which was a new skill for her. She was also told she had to be quiet so she wouldn't disturb the other students.
She is currently functioning at a 12-month level and was at below a three-month level six months ago. You don't tell a baby to be quiet all day when it is learning to talk and you certainly don't teach a baby to cook!
I guess I've blown off some frustration. I'm interested in hearing from others out there who are in the trenches, so to speak. I wouldn't give up my daughter for anything. She is special and one of God's Angels!
