I want to be like General Patton …
I really can’t remember when my dad did not talk about General George Patton. After church on Sundays, we’d usually finish our noon meal and sit around the old round oak table in the dining room with our stomachs full, and listen to our parents tell us stories of the “good old days.” There were three of us kids. Since I was the youngest, and the only boy, I loved to listen to my dad’s World War II stories. Dad thought General Patton was the greatest and told us about how all the other servicemen thought so highly of him.
I wanted to be just like General Patton. I used to pretend that I was him when I played army with the neighborhood kids. A lot of times these neighborhood games were usually no more than a snowball fight, but I’d let my imagination run wild. Yes, I wanted to be the great American hero, General Patton.
You see, I have dyslexia and school was hard for me. Ironically, each day was like my own private war because I was usually being told I was stupid, lazy, or slow. I tried so hard, and it seemed to come so easy for everyone else. Most people think that dyslexia is just seeing words backwards, but that’s not true. Dyslexics have high IQs but typically have problems with reading and writing. We think visually, in images and pictures, rather than in words.
I would go home each day after school and page through my father’s war book. I’d go straight to the pictures of General George Patton and think, because of my dyslexia, I could never do what he had done. How I wished and prayed I could be like him! How my heart would hurt from the limitations the dyslexia created for me. Hope drained from my soul, but I would turn this book page by page, looking at the pictures, and wash away the pain of the day.
After I was older, I joined the National Guard Army and served for seven years. I found the Armed Forces training to be easy. It worked well for people with dyslexia. I also got my wish. Someone had once told me, “Be careful of what you wish for. You just might get it.”
I found out I was just like General George Patton. I never became a general in the service, but I found out Patton was dyslexic. He didn’t pass the first time he went through West Point and had to retry. He had also struggled with reading and writing as a kid. But because of his strength of being analytical, something that comes easily for a dyslexic, he became a great success.
This new found knowledge gave me something new. I received something from a man I had never met but knew all my life, and that something was hope. It had been the one thing that was missing from my life. Hope meant that I could do what ever I wanted, and I did.
I went on to get an undergraduate degree in business and computers and then a masters in business. I now work as a computer consultant, traveling all over the world. So to all who knew him, I want to thank General Patton for being dyslexic and being such a great role model to others.
But mostly, I want to thank General Patton for giving me the gift of hope. If you have hope, you have good outlook on life. When you have a good outlook on life, you can obtain anything! http://www.dyslexiamylife.org
