My journey into the world of blurry, darkness began about eight years ago. I was diagnosed with systemic lupus, and it seems those wild antibodies sure were attracted to my optic nerve.

In 1992, I was declared legally blind, and the inconveniences sprang up all around. First, what does blind look like? And, would I have rhythmn like Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles (I do have a warped sense of humor)? Could I continue to dress professionally and do my makeup? Well, of course, I could --.some of these things just take some creative doings, and I am told almost weekly, "You sure don't look blind." I call that SUCCESS!

I re-entered the workforce in 1996, working as a volunteer for a Congressional candidate. I folded, stuffed, labeled envelopes for mailings and answered the phones. I had been around the campaign for several weeks before the candidate realized I did not SEE just like everyone else. We had quite a discussion. I told him that I did not want to do anything to distract or upset the office. He told me how "amazed" he was. He won his race hands down and asked if I would consider working for him in the Congressional District Office. I was delighted! I started out answering the switchboard (what a hoot!), but I mastered that and moved on to data entry with the help of a Magnisight 60X, receiving enlargement through the computer system.

Now, I am a caseworker doing, of all things, Social Security disability concerns. My blindness may have taken my sight but not my vision. I serve on the board of the Greater Jonesboro Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, the ADA Board for the city of Jonesboro, and several other support groups. Sometimes I may feel that my plate is a little full, but I am so thankful to have a plate that life is just simply OK today. Thanks for letting me share.
