One day, as I was trotting across campus, I noticed a young couple, African-American, who seemed lost. I stopped to inquire whether they needed any help. I directed them to the building they were seeking and began to leave. The young man asked me whether I knew so-and-so. I thought a moment and said, "No."
"She's in a wheelchair," he stated with confidence as if that should make a difference.
It didn't. I looked at him in puzzlement and wonder. My father marched in the equal rights movement on the South and had been raised to combat this same attitude.
I looked him in the eye and said, "Just as you don't know every African-American on campus, I don't know everyone who uses a wheelchair or is disabled."
Silence. He looked away in thought.
"You know," he said quietly, "you're right. I never thought of it that way."
We parted company.
I never understood the concept of institutional racism -- racism which would be so pervasive and and humiliating that it would make one unable to continue. Then I went to graduate school at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
I had such difficulty with the library, whose stacks, tables, computers, bathrooms, telephones, counters, and entrances are so inaccessible, that I dreaded going there. No library work means death to the graduate student's career. Then I knew.
I knew the concept of institutional racism in a manner which I'd never before known it. I knew why it made people quit and relinguish their dreams. I knew why trying became such an effort. I thoroughly understood as never before what it meant for an institution to treat you as less than human (as opposed to a third-class citizen) as the result over that which I had no control.
All I wanted was an education in philosophy. I got a lesson in racism instead.
