I am in shock right now. Something just happened to me for the first time in my entire life.
I resigned from the Cranston, RI, Police Dept. on Jan. 3, 1979 due to my Tourette’s Syndrome (but never left Law Enforcement). My wife walked out on Jan 24, 1981 due to my Tourette’s Syndrome. And on Aug. 5, 1999, after losing jobs, housing, loving relationships due to my Tourette Syndrome, something amazing happened -- and in a big way.
I am now part of RI EMA (RI Emergency Management Agency). We, as Ham Radio Operators, met together as a group, leaving our club affiliations aside for the good of the State of Rhode Island, and formed as one for the first time ever at the State's Emergency Readiness Command Center.
Well, during the meeting (which I happen to tape), some fool got VERY upset with my Ticcing and slapping my legs. He wanted me to be escorted out of the building.
Bruce, the president of my radio club, got up and told this jerk that I have a neurological problem and can't help it.
Then, the most amazing thing happened. The whole group backed ME up and asked HIM to leave, which he did very angrily!
At the end of the meeting, the director of RI EMA took me aside, told me he knows all about Tourettes, my rep and asked if I was the cop who typed the 4-hour message to FEMA in DC after the 1978 Blizzard! (which I happen to be).
So, now I am the new Packet Ham Radio Operator for the RI EMA!!! (That is radio using computers.) He appointed me on my past proven work!
It took 19 years, but at last the word that Tourette’s Syndrome is merely a neurological problem is getting out there even in a "Neurological Wasteland" like the state of Rhode island.
