Story

I remember you because of the way you struggled through each day. Most of all, I remember you because of the discussions your presence among us gave birth to. Most of us ignored you, but others were forced to debate the relevance of you being here.I remember the teachers who did not want you in their classes, and you were allowed to stay only because your faculty advisor intervened for you with the teacher.

I also remember how a lot of people tried to ignore you and focus on talking with your attendant instead. Tell him or ask him or what is he ...? That's a question I heard and asked myself. It was so much more comfortable for us to talk to the attendant because, in doing so, we were ignoring you. Your strange, forced speech, your mannerisms, everything about you: they caused us to withdraw into our protective shell of normalcy.

When you graduated with us, many of us were surprised that you had actually finished. We laughed under our breathes and asked, "Who will hire him?" Though we were friendly and celebrated together, most of us were glad when the time came to depart and go our separate ways.

I wrote this and posted it on your e-mail as a way of saying I am sorry for my part in the grand charade. It would have been more appropriate of me to look you up, to come and sit with you and talk to you. I don't know what my frankness in speech will do to you, how you will respond to it. So I am happy to note your success today and wish you well in passing this on to you.

My response to your posting is: I am not the Cripple you knew back then. I have always had to pay a price to go the extra mile to make the extra effort to convince people I am capable. I watched as people with much less ability and intelligence moved ahead of me. I fought all the way against marginalization of myself. I wanted to be in the mainstream -- not forced into some little insignificant spot. In spite of all my efforts, that is where I ended up, and it has left me bitter.

So today I am a bitter, unhappy Cripple. As such, I am angry and want to tell you how much I resent your attitude as you express it both in words and actions.
