The Summer of 1963

Story

I had just completed my sophomore year at Platteville State University, using a grocery cart to push between classes because it gave me the stability I needed (the cart also came in handy for carrying books).

I couldn’t get a journalism degree at Platteville, so I decided to transfer to the University of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a hilly but beautiful campus. No way could I push a grocery cart on that campus (scooters weren’t available back then).

Just two years before, my application to the Madison campus was rejected because the admissions administrator couldn’t imagine how I could negotiate Bascom Hill and get from one class to another, especially when there was a 15-minute break between them.

That really bothered me. The administrator’s words of discouragement echoed in my mind. The chance of failure was real and probable. After all, what did a green high school senior from rural Wisconsin know – especially one who walked and talked with difficulty.

My fellow classmates at Platteville even thought it was a high risk – tougher campus academically and logistically.

But, there had to be a way – even though I walked very slowly with an uncertainty because of my cerebral palsy.

In the spring of 1963, I bought myself a pair of Canadian crutches and taught myself how to walk with them. But I still walked too slowly to make it between classes. And I could see myself being pushed – and falling – in the rush to get to the next class.

So, during summer of 1963, I practiced with my new crutches by walking as fast as I could along a dirt road in the fields from our farm house to the top of the hill which ringed our farm to the east. It was a quarter mile each way. Each day I timed myself by the kitchen clock, and I gradually trimmed the time down to where I thought it was possible to make it between my most widespread classes on campus. Each day, I told myself, "I’m doing it. I can do it." At the end of each day’s jaunt, I celebrated with cookies and milk.

It worked. Two years later, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison – one of the few graduates, at that time, with a disability.

Little successes – celebrated and internalized – replaced my self doubt with growing confidence. Even now, 36 years later, my self talk still occasionally slips back into reverse gear when I encounter new or unusual situations, but I can usually snap out of it by recalling what I’ve accomplished.
