My wife is the survivor of a brain hemorrhage which occurred 6/4/97. Never thinking that she was disabled, myself and our families gave her all the love and attention we could put together and have seen tremendous results, although I tend to be an eternal optimist. She has difficult days which I can only talk of and I'm left with not much more I can do for her other than support and try to divert attention from the pain.
My problem started to surface during summer 1998 when we were in the application phase for social security. We were being pushed for SS, which was previously applied for, or else benefits would be ceased. Behold benefits were ceased.
In my conversations with the benefits specialist I mentioned that my wife had driven the car. Boy, did he run with that. I also painted what an optimist I was by saying she was doing well and taking care of herself. Well she was, but what he seems to have missed was the terrible head pains or "heaviness" as she describes it, and the next thing I know he's saying she's well enough to return to work.
I've also picked up on their opinion of me in that I thought I could always answer for my wife more articulately. She's Portuguese, born there, speaks English well, but I thought I could define her situation for them better.
Lo and behold, this guy's taking notes when I'm pouring out our life story to him, then he turns around and in writing questions my motivation about my wife's return to work??? I don't get it.
If any of you folks have any stories that you can share with me regarding LT disability insurance, please drop me a line. I've been dealing with UNUM LT disability, and I'm particularly interested in any information about them that you may have.
