I’m a TBI survivor from a bike accident on October 5,1996 and grateful to be back.
As a biker with the Cincinnati Cycle Club, I logged about 4,800 miles of cycle riding that year. I was riding with my club in Hebren, KY. About 60 miles into the ride (they estimate that I was doing ~35 mile per hour) my extra pants that were tied to my seat post (a "do-not do") dropped between the tire and wheel. This created a sudden stop of the bike, and I went flying head-first into the road.
I had a $110.00 Bell bike helmet on that saved my life. I received a major road rash and was in a 9-day coma. After a helicopter ride to University of Cincinnati Hospital, they had the medical experience to drill my head to relieve the pressure. At the time, they told my wife that I would not make it.
I did, and they sent me to Drake Hospital for major rehabilitation. At this time, they told my wife that I may be a wheelchair for the rest of my life. However! When you have an individual in the palm of the LORD receiving his blessings, miracles happen. You ask what blessings did I receive? I am alive and well and can walk on my own such that I can ride again. I have ridden 38 miles again on a CC Club ride.
I am still a CEO-owner for my engineering company and have just been a recipient of a major contract from a Fortune 500 company, so, as a TBI survivor, I am trying to remember my engineering background from Penn State University and meeting my new life head-on (pun-pun).
I am a newer member of the Indiana Brain Injury Association and as such have been invited to their 14th Annual Conference, entitled Moving to the Future (past, present and Future trends in Medical Rehabilitation), September 17 and 18,1998, in Indianapolis, IN. On September 17, the keynote speaker (among may other speakers) will be a fellow head-injury person, Claudia Osborn, D.O.
Claudia is a fellow cyclist who got hit by a hit and skip truck. She’s the author of the Book "Over My Head: Head Injury from The Inside Looking Out".

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85% - ed.
