I have worked in a community college library for the past 19 years. For many of those years, I was able to go out of town to professional meetings as the sole representative of our library staff. These meetings are required attendance two or three times a year to keep up with new policies and procedures; they also serve as professional development activities.
For the past nine years I have not been able to walk without assistance because of degenerative arthritis in my left hip, a direct result of years of wear and tear that comes with aging with cerebral palsy. Six years ago I had a complete hip replacement, which ended the pain; however, I will never be able to go on my own like I once did. The last time I went to one of these professional meetings, about three years ago, the computers were down in the building where we were scheduled to have the meeting. It was hands-on training, which meant the meeting was useless without computer access. After about half-hour, the computer technicians rigged up a computer lab for us in a building across campus at the college where the meeting was held. So we all had to trudge across campus in a steady spring rain. I never could walk fast in my good old days. Now, with two canes, I'm slower than a centipede. But I got there, that's the main thing!
When I got back to campus, I asked my boss: "Please don't make me go to any more off-campus meetings!" He promised he wouldn't, and he's been true to his word. Now some of my colleagues go to these off-campus meetings, come back and explain to me what went on there, while I keep our campus library open. Someone has to hold down the fort, as the saying goes, and I'm glad to be the homebody! It's a win-win situation as far as I'm concerned.
So, if you're ever in the vicinity, come up and see me sometime in the library, I'll be here, happy to see you.
