Story

I'm sure all of us with physical disabilities have been subjected to leg braces at one time or another in our life's journey. They are a godsend to a great many of us who need the stability and support they give us for our independence. For me, they were a necessary evil, something to be endured until the end of the day when I could shed them and be free.

I could always walk, and I thought the way I walked was just fine, the classic scissors-gait with my arms swinging about for balance. I didn't need canes or crutches; I just went as hard as I could go!

I had a set of long-leg braces, HKAFO's for those of us that know the lingo. With the braces, I could walk normally, albeit slow and lumbering -- and only with crutches. Being encased in the braces, with the knee hinges locked, you had no choice but to walk straight, but my legs wouldn't move on their own. I had to have crutches to push off and get started. Then I couldn't go very fast at all, always looking down all the time, watching where my feet were going to land. It wasn't really walking; it was more like stilted progression. I was always glad for the end of the day when I could pull them off and go free again.

So, I finally decided I'd rather be "me" without the aggravation of the braces and crutches. So that's my experience with leg braces.
