Story

My story is one of a situation I found myself in as an HIV+ person. I was once sacked from a job because there was a lot of fear around my disability -- my virus. I had to fight the dismissal from the job because it was not only my livelihood being taken from me; it was a message that said, "HIV positive people are bad", and I am not a bad person.

I have a web site, http://www1.loom.net.au/home/dpj,that links to developments in PLWHA (People Living With HIV/AIDS) culture. Much of this I have created (see http://www1.loom.net.au/home/dpj/encore.htm), or at least been involved in.

In the act of having to defend my right to do my job, I had to find out how people felt about my disability the hard way. Now I understand the problems they have. I listened to them, but I insisted they hear me as well, and I have defined more clearly who I am (forced to because of my hidden disability).

I won my case before a tribunal. I am proud of that.

I didn't get my job back, but I created a new area of work in the field of my practise -- as a dramatist. I wrote 'educational' drama about my virus and creative theatre in the community as well as on the main stage.

This life changing experience has made me a much stronger person. I feel strong enough to advocate wisely -- with love, thought and patience. I have been called tenacious. I think that helps.
