Seems like all of my life I've been dealing with difficult situations as a direct result of living with cerebral palsy. However, we can't blame our circumstances on misfortune; what if Job had done that? We must learn to press on, regardless. Here's my story on this issue.
When I was small, my sainted parents were determined that I was going to be raised and sent to regular school, just like everyone else -- although the doctors told them, if I were sent to the orthopedic school, I would become a leader. because I was "so much better off" than most of the kids there; but, if they sent me to normal school, I would have to always take "a back seat" to the rest of the kids. Well, I went to regular school and I did pretty much "take a back seat" to everybody else, which was hard. I didn't have many friends, and the friends I did have just seemed to tolerate me because their parents made them be nice to me. This was all good for me, though, because it prepared me for the "real world." My parents were always telling me I was just as good as Mr. Anybody. I always wondered where this Mr. Anybody lived.
When I got in college, I did start making real friends, which was wonderful. Young kids and teenagers, especially, are obsessed with "image," and they are afraid to associate with anyone who is different because it would not be "cool" to be seen with them.
Now I have many wonderful friends who accept me for what I am. The knowledge that I have friends whom I can turn to and talk with has helped me deal with the difficult situations in my life. I guess you could say I went to "the school of hard knocks" and learned that maybe I am as "good as Mr. Anybody," after all. Never, ever give up!
