Story

Helplessness

One day a group of us decided to spend some time in the countryside. We happened upon a beautiful spot near the ocean, and, because it was low tide, my friends decided to be a bit adventurous by exploring the old wharfs and big rocks along the shoreline. It wasn't accessible to me, and so I just sat by the highway relaxing and reading a book. After a while I thought I heard a funny noise coming from the water. I called out, but nobody answered. Twice more I heard a sound, which I thought was somebody calling for help. I got as close to the edge of the road as I dared but I couldn't see a thing.

The tide was coming in now and it was starting to get dark. Everybody started wondering back to the car, and we got ready to leave. Everybody that is, except for Gilbert. Nobody had seen him for a long time, and they had presumed that he had come back to join me by the vehicle. We spread out, calling his name -- but he didn't answer. Finally we heard a shout coming from one of the old wharfs. One of my friends had found Gilbert!

He was bent over with his head jammed between two planks. The level of the ocean water was just touching his nose, but he couldn't pull himself free. The noises that I had earlier were his calls for help. I have never quite understood how he got himself in that predicament, but I know that, even if I had heard him calling out clearly, there was very little that I would have been able to do to help.
