David, I applaud you in your efforts to start a support group for brain injured people. You asked how do you get people to come to a meeting. The simple answer is that you don't. You must remember that you cannot control anything outside of your own self. All you can do is organize the group under an appealing name. Develop an interesting agenda and advertise your meetings. One good place to start is at your local hospital. Maybe they will sponsor your effort and give you free space and refreshments as well.
However, in short order, you might find that people come to be entertained rather than to share coping skills and rehab experiences.
I went through this while starting a stroke support group at the Doylestown, PA, hospital. Having the hospital behind you is a definite plus to get started because they know old patients and current in-patients in your area of interest. When the hospital announces something, it has more punch behind it plus you get free steno services.
It will likely take four or five good sessions to get your members to start bonding in a serious manner. After that, they should end up calling each other on the phone and even visiting in the future if all goes well. You might attend a couple of local AA beginner's meetings to see how they operate as starters. They are usually a good model.
I wish you luck and if I can be of assistance as you go along, just let me know. At
least , I could tell you the traps that I found in an endeavor such as yours.
