How have you successfully dealt with the double whammy: disability and depression?

Story

Depression is a hard thing for me to talk about because I don't want anyone to know I suffer from it. I would like everyone to think that I'm on top of the world.

I'm not. I am scared and afraid. I have lost a number of dear friends since the onset of my disability, and memories of good times with them are like a weight that presses on my heart. This is the greatest pain I have ever known. I have made new friends, and they have a special place to be sure, but there is still agony from lost friendships.

Before I realized that some of my dearest friends were about to leave me behind, I started a nature program for children with disabilities. I incorporated and formed a Board of Directors of loving and caring people who wanted to do good things in the community. I was so grateful that I still had my friends that I wanted to share this community spirit with disabled children who would not be included otherwise. My heart was light.

Then the phone calls began to taper off and finally they stopped. "Community spirit" was moving too fast for me to keep up. My own family has suffered tragedies, and most are gone. My community was my family. Now I look in the window of my home, while my family eats Thanksgiving dinner, but I am not permitted to sit at the table where I was once welcomed.

I tell you, I would rather die tonight than awaken from another dream where I am still welcomed in this family. The burden of these dreams and memories are excruciatingly painful. I have prayed that God would take me in my sleep, to a home where I would be loved and never tossed aside again, but he has not answered my prayer.

One day he might, but until that time, my life will continue on behalf of children with disabilities. Perhaps it is more important for me to live with this pain for their sake, than it is for me to die and be free.

I planned my death well. I made final arrangements, and left money and directions for my Board of Directors to continue the work of our organization.

I planned to die, but I cannot. I want to die, but I have decided that I will not die by my own hand. When God decides it is time for me to go, I will be free of this pain. But if my Savior suffered so greatly on the cross for my salvation, I can live with my heartache a little longer, for the sake of our children.
