Disability and Depression: The Double 'D'. The Double Whammy. Call it what you like, it all ends up in the trash eventually anyway.

The disabled, the handicapped, the odd one on the block, the one no-one sits next to in the school lunchroom, the one who must always sit on the side-lines of school activities for they cannot compete in sport, rough sport. The one who gets tripped, the one who gets pushed down steps, the one someone is always laughing at for they are different. The wheelchair won't run because a schoolmate thinks it is funny to pull the plug from the outlet while charging. The driver of the car who has to, must be, first off the line while we are still in the middle of the intersection. The shopping cart that comes seemingly out of nowhere only to knock you down, run you over, hit your wheelchair broadside because they are in a hurry to check out first. The store owner who, because he doesn't want "your kind" in their store, does not provide handicapped access.

How long must one of us endure this treatment before we get tired of it, sick of it, angry enough to do something about it, before we all suffer from clinical depression.

Depression, I'd like to meet the man, for surely it must have been a man who coined the word for women are not even that cruel, is a word that I been fighting for what seems to be an eternity now only though it has only been a little over a year. Depression means medication. I don't know which is worse, the depression or the drugs that are supposed to combat it. Prozac has worked for me glorioulsy for about three months but now even I see a decline in mood and an increase in depression, suicidal depression.

Disablities have no emotion, no thought process, no memory of the torment they have caused millions of people daily, nor do they care. They are a test for us. For some of us a passage in time, for still others a religious experience where G-d has either helped or hindered our lives.

I always thought or was led to believe that peanut butter and jelly went hand-in-hand -- or a circus and cotton candy. No one prepared me for the Double 'D'.
