Ponderings on Death
Oh, God, is it that time already? I just woke up. Everyday now is a new awakening. My life has been consumed in an emotional knot of depression. I'm 47 and I just met "hope." I just became willing and open. I'm just experiencing deeper levels of friendship and love.
Some friends have died this past year. I just learned how to "miss" someone. What is that "thing" that animates the mass of bones and tissues and organs we are made up of. The thing that propels and motivates us to action. The thing that sparks a chemical reaction from a thought into some kind of purposeful movement. Maybe that of a hand motion or love. What is the thing that causes us to be recognized from each other ... the unique combination we transform into our particular creative lives? How do feelings arise and where are they located? What produces values?
What is the gradient between living and dying? One minute we are awake and engaged in life and then something occurs and the magic is gone. The great mystery is gone. All of our toys are left in a heap at the doormat. There is no longer a carrot hovering over us enticing us into the future. There are no more circumstances to bless, curse, anticipate or regret. What is the legacy of us that will be preserved in the hearts of our kindred spirits here on the planet? How will anyone know if we have been here?
So, what can I say about death? There is a peace that needs to be made with it as it looks right now. Resistance will only cloud the inevitable. Kicking and screaming our way out won't change it. The funeral parlor is the common denominator where we will all meet. It doesn't have to be morbid. Resistance will block us from the comfort we need in the sharing of this experience. Others need to participate in our departure. They are left. They are grieving our loss. They need to prepare themselves to continue on as well as their transition into death.
Will we go out like a cat scratching its claws down the blackboard? Today that would be me. I don't feel like I am ready right now. Like I said, I just woke up. But I know there are "things" that will arise I can't imagine. I hope I will be able to meet it with some peace.
In the meantime, I guess I'll try to focus on the big surprise of each moment, as the Zen's say. I'll try to celebrate the moment, even though I get hung up in toys and comparisons which clog the mystery. I guess it's something we all have in common, regardless of disability. The same 24 hours.
I like the Beatles' song, "Hello, Good Bye." You say Good Bye I say hello, I don't know why you say goodbye I say hello ... hello, hello, I don't know why you say goodbye I say hello." We spend our whole lives doing this ... greetings and good-byes.
Beatles' other song: "Lend me an ear and I'll sing out a tune and I'll try not to sing out of key; I get high with a little help from my friends."
Let's lend an ear of friendship to someone today in the spirit of never knowing the uncertainty of the duration of the visit. :)
