Everything happens for a reason, even "Head Injuries"

My story

I can't help but think that I am one of the luckiest persons alive. Very rarely is anyone given such a clear message as I received in 1985.

I'd just graduated from college intent on going to medical school. As I was applying, I realized that I didn't know the first thing about other people. Therefore, I decided to put off graduate school awhile, and join the Peace Corps. I ended up as a H.S. Chemistry Teacher in Belize, Central America.

Six months later, I woke up in a hospital with snow outside the window. Last thing I remembered, I had been walking along one of the two paved roads in Belize, minding my own business. Next thing I knew, I woke up in a Head Injury Rehabilitation Center in Boston, MA. Apparently, I’d arrived there unconscious after a tortilla truck had crashed into me. (If the world was a completely fair place, I’d be receiving free tacos for the rest of my life.) However, I was not concerned about food or trucks at that point; I was trying to figure out what I was doing in a hospital, in "cold-country," lying flat on my back, tied into bed.

Well, it turned out that several weeks before, I had emerged from my coma - WITH NO SHORT-TERM MEMORY. That is, the nurses would tell me that I couldn't walk. I assured them that I could; after all, I was 22 years old. They told me I had been in an accident and no longer had the balance or co-ordination. I answered "Oh, ok." Then not having short-term memory, within 3 minutes, I'd forget that we'd had the conversation and attempt to get up and walk. After enough falls onto my (already damaged) head, they tied me into bed to protect me.

Imagine my surprise when, one morning, I woke up, fully conscious (not remembering the previous 6 weeks). I yelled for a nurse. That's when I realized that I could barely talk. Over the next 18 months, I struggled to get out of that hospital. I believe that my primary impetus was to prove these "know-it-all" doctors wrong, the ones who told my parents that I'd never walk again, or get out of that hospital into the REAL WORLD. I am the only patient that I know of, in the history of that facility, who did manage to escape to a (semi-) normal life.

Two years later, I was able to return to Belize --- physically damaged but able to carry on. My neighbor looked at me and suggested that I accompany her to her chiropractor. I decided to try something new and different. It was an 8-hour bus ride, one way, but he was worth it. I went to him twice a month for the rest of my stay in Belize. The medical doctors hadn't been able to help me, but he clearly could.

That clarified the decisions: I returned to the US and enrolled in Chiropractic College. In school, I met my husband, another head injury victim from 30 years before. I am a D.C., and I met the love of my life, all because I was clobbered in the head by that truck.

Not only that, but because of our situations, we discovered the specific "Upper Cervical" work which we do. I feel like a new person now!
