Hello. My name is Terry Taylor. I'm 44 years old and live in the UK. Perhaps I should explain my subject heading.
Disability Media.
I've been a radio DJ in my spare time for over 20 years in a community & hospital radio environment. I have been successful in earning the respect of my professional peers over the years for my knowledge of many musical genres & the standard of programming I always turn out. Also for the level of enthusiasm I always show & for my true dedication to my art. I've done virtually every type of programme you care to think of over the years.
Currently I present 2 shows per week - 1 of country, the other of jazz. Would truly love to do it full time but without the restrictions of a playlist programmes are a lot better when there's presenter involvement.
I'm a huge rock fan (not metal) & love the old 50's & 60's music of most styles. I used to go to a lot of concerts. 1998 saw me going to my 25th Elton John concert in 25 years: one of his best ever.
The disability work I've done came through my other hobby karate which I'll talk about more in a moment. I've occasionally taught visually impaired teenagers in a college setting all about radio & helped them put together some work for their college studies. This year I also successfully taught a blind friend who is now a full time regular sports & music presenter on the same station I volunteer for here in UK. I think he'll make an excellent pro presenter in about 12 months' time once he's developed his skills further. I know everyone in the station was surprised by his talents.
As a result of this I'm involved in a project to set up a training centre for disabled people to come & learn the art of all aspects of radio. (I know my subject area extremely well right across all the different aspects of radio). In the UK, whilst there are a handful of disabled people involved professionally in radio & TV, there is no system developed over here to take that forward on an ORGANISED basis. I will teach them literally all aspects of radio from management, pr, sales, news, production, presenting, etc. & will forge links with stations who are open minded enough to consider such candidates based on their talents & not on their disability. The project obviously needs a lot of money & what I have described to you is only the outline of the project. Perhaps, therefore, it is important for you to understand that for every time I say 'I' please 'read' DMMA (my rganisation's name). I would be delighted to hear from anyone either in a personal or professional capacity who would like more information on this project. Please state the reasons for your interest when replying.
Disability Martial Arts.
I've been a karate student for about 15 years now. Of this, I've been teaching for about 10 years, 8 as my own Club Instructor. Ever since I can remember I've always wanted to teach disabled people, initially just visually impaired. Nowadays I teach any disability category. I've had huge success from it not just through my Club activities all my disabled students have been put through the same course work (only occasionally with minor adaptations) & without exception all have passed their gradings.
As an example, I have a young deaf boy in my Club who joined me in 1996. He is now about 18 months away from gaining black belt status & I am confident he will achieve it, too. In 1996, I also began a rather unique project a Festival programme to develop martial arts across the board for disabled people here in UK. The Festival runs annually in my region & gives disabled people of all ages, whether at school or college, or as adults, the opportunity to try out a variety of martial arts. We had 10 at this year's Festival with 50 instructors coaching for the day. We provide a follow-up service to attract any one who is interested in joining local mainstream clubs. The day has become an education not just for the participants (over 300 this year) but also for the instructors as sadly pitifully few teach disabled people on a regular basis (not a criticism, just a fact of life).
The Festival programme has snowballed into such a huge success it is now spreading around the country. I have regularly authored articles on it for disability & martial arts magazines. It has regularly also attracted a lot of interest from overseas people/organisations through postings on other websites (DMMA's own will be up early in 1999).
The value of the Festival programme can clearly not be under-estimated. Here in the UK, apart from judo, there is sadly no development work being undertaken, & most importantly none at grass roots level. I have therefore undertaken this role with a great deal of success as more & more disabled people have taken up a martial art directly following their participation at the day.
Rather like the radio development plans I have outlined above, the description so far is only a 'sketch'. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in this project. Please state in what way. I would in particular be keen to hear from any disabled people who already practise martial arts & from any instructors who coach disabled people or who are disabled yourself in some way.
Many thanks for reading this article. Please feel free to contact me.
