On the 21st of this month will be the 2 year anniversary of our life being forever altered.
I was stricken by a virus that attacked my CNS it was given the name: Transverse Myelitis. It all started out with bronchitis and escalated to where I sit today. I am forever wheelchair bound due to that fateful June day.
I spent 2 weeks in intensive care and then was upgraded to going to a great rehab center, Dodd Hall at Ohio State University. The people treated me great and were so patient with me. I learned to write, eat and dress myself once again. I also learned that the damage to my spinal cord would prevent me from ever being the active person I was before.
I was a very active gardener, had a huge yard with many perennial beds. Our home was a 3-story, hundred-year-old lady. A paraplegic sure does not need a house of three stories, so we sold the grand old lady.
We now live in a small English style cottage and I am slowly going back into gardening. I went from a property that had no flowers to one that I have saturated with many flowers.
Learning to garden from a wheelchair is a humbling experience. This year I have been doing better, don't get as frustrated as I did last season.
My disability has caused me to lose many friends, (I ask myself, would I be like that? No! I would remember friends no matter what.) Those kind of people were not friends in the first place. It is terrible that one has to get gravely ill before you know whom you can count on. I have gained more compassionate friends through the Internet.
One thing I have problems with...is sales persons ignoring the elderly or those with handicaps. Each time that has happened to me, I always smile and thank them for being so kind and helpful. Amazing how the person's expression changes. Fortunately it has only happened twice, the first time an able bodied woman cut in front of my chair nearly hitting my feet with her cart, her husband followed behind her and bumped me in the shoulder....no excuse me or anything. Second time was a sales clerk (amazing that both incidents happened in same store). She grabbed my money like I was a leper and only partially bagged my purchases. I hope she remembers me, because I dressed her down quite sweetly.
I believe that I was destined to be paralyzed the day I was born. I know I have helped some by having a good outlook on life. It was a struggle, but I have made it.
My family has been a great inspiration for my getting as well as I have. My husband is my caregiver; he helps me with daily routines that I cannot do alone. I would not want to go on without my loving husband at my side.
My last thoughts are: be kind to those that might not be kind to you. It comes back in twofold when one is kind to another person.
TO PLANT A GARDEN IS TO BELIEVE IN TOMORROW.
