Billy Golfus’ essay is quite "spot-on." I think that many care-givers and professionals have been conditioned to help from an early age. But, this does not mean that they are necessarily doing it for malicious, power-hungry needs.
In any group of people, there are people who are "good," "bad" and "indifferent." I think that this applies to people in any culture, race, creed, religion, nationality or profession. So there are malicious, do-gooder professionals who are "good," "bad" and "indifferent" in dealing with people who have disabilities. People with disabilities are not always angels, either. But, of course, they have good reason to be angry about certain issues.
I think that there are also some caregivers who suffer terribly from burnout because they are compulsive, masochistic helpers and are easily manipulated by people who control them, whether they be managers or clients.
What complicates matters is that no matter how "good" the professional or the person with the disability, both are constrained in a social system which is often demoralising, insensitive, degrading, disempowering, alienating; which is hierarchical and based on supporting the status quo; and which often ignores the person with the disability completely.
In short, the politicians cannot get many votes from people with disabilities, so they are largely ignored by politicians. And there is no consideration, whatsoever, for the needs of people with disabilities, unless certain people can get up and lobby for more rights for them.
I feel that there should be a lot more lobbying for rights. After all, we have now got past the lobbying for blacks, women and gays. People with disabilities need much more focused and concentrated strategies for empowerment.
Such strategies should come from working together with interested "professionals" rather than from attacking "professionals" who wish to "help" with empowerment.
Just a few thoughts.
