I'm one of the do-gooders. Except that I don't fit the mold. I volunteer without pay with children who are severely handicapped and abandoned in Romania. We bring no religion into our work. We do not get paid. We do not receive room, board or travel. We manage the nonprofit organization, raise the money, and allocate the resources. It isn't easy. I do it because my spriritual values tell me that this is the way human beings are supposed to treat each other.
The comment about the phrase "at-risk" stopped me cold. I use it a lot and I had to ask myself why. I think its problem may stem from the part of the description that isn't spoken. When we use it in Romania, we refer to children who are "at-risk" of being abandoned to a system that has abused hundreds of thousands of children already. Yes, it's a value judgment, but "the system" reeks of the philosophies and values of Hitler.
I appreciated the comment about the third parties providers being the ones that the "helping professionals" report to. Yes. I wish I could do everything I know is best for the population with which we work, but we do not have the money. If we apply for grants, we find ourselves in the difficult position of being beholden to someone else to allocate our resources in a certain way to achieve a result established as desirable by someone who never was in the country and has no understanding of the cultural forces at work.
I work with children. I try to help them grow to be the most independent they can be in order to avoid some of the system's abuses. Yes, I've made the decision for them that they should be independent, but I try to respect their personal preferences as best as I can intepret them ( a smile, a frown, a cry).
I have met and I try to avoid those kinds of people you describe as the stereo-type do-gooder. But then, what am I?
