It probably never would have occurred to me to make this a priority if I hadn't been misdiagnosed with a mental illness in l972. I was married and had 3 children under the age of 3. My hateful husband couldn't "manage" me, so he enlisted the aid of two sexist psychiatrists to attempt to teach me to listen to him. They subjected me to every odious type of treatment they could -- the whole measurement of my alleged insanity being that my husband was boss. They were determined to teach me that.
I divorced my husband, but they were able to inflict a lot of damage merely because I had three babies in diapers and couldn't go anywhere.They behaved so odiously toward me that I didn't see a doctor for 25 years.
During this time I was a goverment employee, reared 3 children to happily adjusted adulthood, purchased my own home, and obtained a Master's Degree.
Three years ago I became to ill to work and had to start visiting doctors. I learned I had Multiple Sclerosis and that was my problem in l972 when the shrinks said I was crazy! It was not until then that I had a full understanding of who I was!
I am very proud of my independent life, despite the damage those shrinks inflicted on me. For 2 years I have been on disability, and it must be something about my demeanor that defies anyone to try to take care of me.
I have a wonderful life! Although I can't hold a traditional job, I am a good money manager, and I make more money in Mutual Funds than I receive from my pension. I am unmarried, but I have company whenever I want.
No one can dominate me again, even though I am disabled. I would have taken it for granted if it hadn't been for the Holocaust (no exaggeration) I went through over a quarter of a century ago.
