I've been amazed at the expanded contacts I've made because of my cerebral palsy.

While attending a special orthopedic school in grades 1-8 60 miles from my home farm in Wisconsin, I stayed with four different families during week days and then went home (by bus) to my own family on weekends. Watching people in the bus depot was an experience I would never have had, if I would have been able to attend the isolated, one-room school in my farming community back home.

I have the experience of growing up in five different families with a wide range of backgrounds, from farmers and laborers to teachers and professors.

Some of those contacts eventually helped me and my parents travel to Africa, Europe and the Soviet Union. Those trips, in turn, fostered a world viewpoint in my younger brother and sister, who later joined the Peace Corps.

Years later, that broad experience, I believe, helped me to become an effective manager and administrator as a vice president of communication for a Fortune 500 company.

In an odd way, my disability helped me become a more well-rounded person than I probably would have been without my disability. Under an unusual set of circumstances, I became "mainstreamed" before anybody had coined the word or thought about its ramifications.
