I never thought much about Alzheimer's Disease. Why should I? I was young, 51 years old to be exact. If I would have really thought about it, my mother and grandmother both had the disease. As a social worker, I worked with some who had the disease and their families. I had taken some classes on Alzheimer's Disease and read about it in the newspaper often. But I just never thought that I would some day have it.
I am now 56 years old. The early stages of the disease have taken their toll on me, but I'm still able to be active and function on my own. Sure, I need lots of help. My wonderful wife, Sharon, gives me lots of TLC. She is my caregiver, and I am very grateful. Together we make it.
So many times, we have to get a disease or have it in our families to really relate. The pain makes us conscious of the real world. Perhaps it makes us conscious of really what is important in life.
