I want to add to my previous post, the one I posted here yesterday. Seeing myself from another's perspective has made me realize how important communication is.
In the example with the police officer arresting me for littering, when now I look at myself through his eyes, I see he observed a person wandering alleys at 2:30 in the morning, carrying a couple of bags. When he confronted me, this person (me) made angry statements, dropped the groceries. What he saw was an abnormal situation he was not sure how to deal with. He dealt with it by arresting me.
What I saw was a policeman following me around and around in an abnormal, frightening fashion. I reacted in anger. I had been through enough and did not also need to deal with someone, a cop, harassing me.
The whole situation would have easily resolved itself had I assumed his lack of understanding of it or if he had communicated his confusion with me. He could not read my mind and know what I had been through, what I was up to. I could not read his, could not know if he was friend or foe. Communication can not only ease tense situations, but it can collapse boundaries and open doors.
With my physician, I have found this to be true. I must first drop my preconceived notions of what a visit will end up like or what he is like personally or what I think he thinks of me. I then must try to see myself as he sees me. What he sees may be far from who I am or what I experience in a physical or mental illness, but it will affect the visit. His perceptions and mine can taint the visit before it starts.
Before a visit, I attempt to come up with a way to let the doctor experience what I do, emotionally and physically. It is best to leave anger, resentment, guilt, self-pity, all these things, behind in some dark closet because they inhibit true vision, which is needed for clear communication.
When I step outside myself and into another, I learn how best I can communicate with that person, but I also see myself and my behavior from another perspective. Input can lead to needed changes and insight.
