I am incidental to my story

Story

I do not wish to denigrate the narrative form as a vehicle for expressing experiences, nor do I wish to compete in the arena of disability. Both are inevitabilities of the human condition: story-telling and competitiveness. They are mediated by culture but nonetheless not omnipresent, for there are some who are always excluded, though perhaps neither through choice nor through determination, in the philosophical sense.

My story is brief but only as a result of my desire to restrict the contagion of the pretentiousness that is my real burden. I may defer recounting it but only to contrast the story itself with the wothless metanarrative which suffocates it, prefigures it, irritates the reader.

I could begin by saying that 'It happened one day that...' or 'There I was and then...' or 'I woke up to find that...' but this does not account for the fact that at the core of my fateful experience, my incidental accident, I was neither exactly the agent, the patient, nor the action: I was elsewhere, absent, nullified.

My story consists of one line, the rest is the silence of which my continuing life consists. The details are common not specific; the people instrumental in saving my life and ensuring my recovery the heroes, if heroes there must be; I am just the 'shifter', the contentless signifier: recovery is never complete.

In that story the words 'javelin', 'penetrated' and 'my brain' are playful constituents; 'hemiplaegia', 'prolonged hospitalisation', ' "near-complete recovery" ' the mature components and 'depression', 'frustration' and 'morbid thoughts' the senescent residue. My sincere thanks go to those involved in the earlier phases; I hold myself proudly responsible for any errors thereafter.
