Hi, your story is so real for me. I am not disabled, but my sister and brother are. They are younger than me, and we have had some troublesome times because they are both in wheelchairs. That didn't stop me from arguing my way into these places where wheelchairs had no place.

Each and every time I go back East to visit my sister and brother, we go everywhere. Nothing stops us now. I grab the wheelchairs, place them in the trunk and make sure my sister and brother are belted in. We go to the Cape, Mystic Seaport, New York City, anywhere we want to go. They love to go out and eat.

But back in the '60s, it was difficult. Not many places were wheelchair accessible. Even these shops that sell crystal and glass use to cringe as I pushed my sister or brother's chairs through their aisles. I would laugh to myself at the thought of material crap meaning more than a human life.

Your attendant was your friend, and you will never forget her. My sister, who is one year younger than me, accompanied me to all the dances, shows, shopping centers in blizzards, ice storms -- whatever. It was fun, it was great and we all laugh and talk about the people we encountered then and now.
