Feeling Lost in The System

Well, it happened today, June 20 , 1999. I've come to realize that it it almost impossible to get any kind of assistance when you are disabled.

I have a husband and 2 children. As of December of 1998, I became disabled because I'm in the end stages of kidney failure. I am 31 years old. I applied for Social Security. They didn't have a problem agreeing that I was disabled, but they did have a problem granting me disability payments.

All agencies go by gross income; they do not consider what is taken out for taxes or other garnishments. My husband makes $440.00 per week gross. With taxes and garnishments taken out, he brings home $336.00 per week. For a family of four it just doesn't make ends meet.

Well, I guess I've vented my anger about this whole thing -- not that it helps me any, but maybe, if someone reads this, they won't have any false expectations about any help they can get. It just destroyed my world and any kind of faith in the system that is supposed to help you. All because of gross income.

There is so much more I would like to discuss, but I don't want to make this letter any longer. But, please remember just one thing from this letter. PLEASE DON'T HAVE HIGH HOPES OF A LOT OF ASSISTANCE BECAUSE IT REALLY HURTS WHEN YOU'RE LET DOWN!
