Allowing myself to feel the injustice

The first time I allowed myself to feel the injustice was when I began to think about the causalness with which some of my friends dismissed me in the beginning of the second year of my disability (certainly not all my freinds though -- I have been blessed with a few good friends). I realized that my friendship had only been a "flag of convenience." One woman said that she only paid more attention to me in that first year because of "what I was going through." I felt like a fool; I thought we were building a friendship. Figuratively speaking, I'd felt as though I had been left for dead.

But the casual nature of it all... They did the deed without a second thought. They moved on to more convenient friendships without concern for the damage they had done. At the same time I began to read about how the Nazi party murdered disabled Germans before they moved against the Jews. I had always wondered how such a thing as the Holocaust could happen. What kind of mind could allow a person to casually commit mass murder?

I began to draw the conclusion that it could be the same kind of mind that would allow someone to casually abandon a friend because the friend had acquired a disability. The comparison chilled me, and it chills me still.

I look at these former friends, and I see the faces of enemies. They are not people who innocently misunderstand, rather they are people I love who casually expelled me from society.

It's unjust, but the casualness is frightening.
