It has been almost18 years since I was first dignosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It's a popular disease, with many bound down by it. Just a sick joke!
Actually there are many that are bound DOWN by this disease. We all start disability by being at its beck and call. It is only when we map out our lives with what we know what we can do and stop crying about what we can't do can we start to really start living again. It took me years to get to the stage of happiness and the feeling of the joy of living that I now have. I guess I had to see a number of other disabled that, at the time, were more disabled than myself. Many of these were living the greatest lives. I asked myself, WHY?
Eventually I decided that life goes on, and painting in oils became my main occupation. I started to realize I could succeed at it. I could focus on it and see progress. Then bang! I sold several paintings. Now I could be proud, the crip in the wheelchair is doing something. With pride in myself, I could roll out in the public and now paint on sight instead of at home. I loved the attention of people coming by and watching. A few even wanted to buy the painting before I was finished. Spirits within me grew to great heights.
Next I was elected (although I was the only name on the ballot to be voted on for the office) president of a men's group of over 60 members. We meet every month twice.
One funny thing happened one day at a meeting. I asked if any one knew if there were any reports of illness in the membership. One guy said that Joe Y. had gotten worse and was so bad that he was now in a wheelchair and wasn't going anywhere. Then I retorted, "I'm in a wheelchair and I go."
"But you are different," they said. I dropped it there and urged every one if they could to either phone or visit Joe Y. That very same day I went to visit Joe. Fortunately his home was accessable. He was not surprized to see me. "I thought you might be around; you go everywhere in your chair," he said. "How do you do that?"
"Easy," I said. "You just roll the wheels and it moves. Actually, Joe, you just have to decide to trade in your car and get a van with a lift and hand controls,"
Eventually I got Joe to come with me in my van which actually would take three wheelchairs or two scooters. We first just went to the Mall; it is easy rolling. I let him use my scooter, and I used his wheelchair.
Now I enjoy writing a web page for MS people. I have met many disabled people in the last 18 years. Each one, regardless of their attitude, has helped me grow to a point that disability doesn't control me. I do what I want. And you know -- I keep finding I can do more.
