Home employment ideas: I know people who have learned web page design. The learned a lot and then built a portfolio of work they could point potential customers to. This tends to pay about $35/hr in this area.

Other ideas include bookkeeping services for small business. With Quicken and other applications much of what makes a gas station, pager company, or doctor's office deal with accounts payable and accounts receivable can be done at home.

Lastly, I know another person who does taxes. She gets forms for all the states off the web. I fax'd her my tax documents, she filled them out for me and fax'd them back. She lives in Massachussets and I live in Georgia. It worked ok and was a lot less wear and tear on me because I didn't have to go into someone's office.

Any of these use your computer and office skills and can be done from home. Just some thoughts. I hope you can work something out. I'm sure it's a very frustrating experience.

Oh, and Hewlett-Packard has a great track record of letting employees telecommute. I know people who work for them and don't have an office at all. There are also companies (usually big ones like IBM) that take pride in recruiting the differently abled. You might want to check with your alma mater and see if their placement office can get you more information on that.
