I was born December 23, 1959, two months early. At the age of 12, my parents noticed that one side of my back was larger than the other. They took me to the doctor and he told us that it would never get worse, but it did. At the age of 15, I was sent to a doctor in Atlanta, GA, to be assessed for surgery. At this time we were told that I had Scholiosis and that it was very bad.
Before I could have the surgery, I was in an auto accident that left me without an ankle joint, and the other leg was broken, as well as other bones. It took me two years before I could walk again. At the age of 18, I had a herrinton rod put surgically into my back. At the age of 20 and six months pregnant, the rod broke. At the age of 21, I had to have surgery again, then again twice in 1995, for a total of 19 surgeries.
Now, at the age of 39, I have degenerative arthritis in my spine, hips, and ankle. I'm constantly in pain, and my L5 vertibre has collapsed. I no longer have any sense of balance.
I have tried to work (I have an associates degree in computer science but have never had the opportunity to use it or my certificate in Office Occupations). I did work once, and, when I did, I had to take medical leave because of having back surgery. While on medical leave, I was fired from my job. I contacted Nashville, the capital of TN, and they told me that there was not a law in the State of Tennessee against firing an individual handicapped or not in this state. The only way I could fight it was if I were a single parent. Also that this was one of two states in this whole country without that law, I don't even know what it is called now, because it has been so long ago.
I also couldn't draw SSI because my husband worked; but, yet, I could be fired so that I couldn't help my husband to pay all of my medical bills as well as our other bills. Why is it, in a country as rich as this and that is so eager to help other less privileged countries, that someone like me can't make a living for myself or help my husband to make it in this "Great Country of Ours."
I want to work; I am no longer physically able to work outside my home but would be more than willing to work from my home. Is there anyway that I can get some help in helping myself? I'm tired of being told, "You can't." I would like to be told, "You can" and "You're doing a good job," for a change.
