I have spastic cerebral palsy and need care providers for all my care: dressing, toileting, transfers, feeding and bathing.

I am independently mobile in a power wheelchair with head controls. I understand everything but have difficulty speaking. I like traveling, listening to classical music, watching TV, gardening, bird watching, going out in town, talking to my family by phone and seeing nice scenery. And I am a stargazer.

I was born on December 1, 1934. I lived with my grandmother, Roslyn, whom I called Nanny. Maybe that’s where I got my middle name.

It is difficult to remember, but I think I lived with my grandmother until I was about five and a half years old because my Mom had to work. My Nanny was a wonderful woman and had a nice smile. She had aspecial high chair where I used to sit. She had a hole made in it to enable me to go to the bathroom.

My Nanny gave me a small carpet sweeper to play with. I still have one like it in my cupboard. Our house had a big veranda around it; that’s where I had my first real toy: a Ferris wheel. I could put a dog or duck on it for a ride and I could turn it myself. My Dad had an old car; it was a Model T, and we used to go for rides.

In 1940, when I was five years old, my mother put me into Woodlands, a mental institution in BC, Canada. She said I was getting too heavy and awkward to carry. She did not know what else to do at the time. My mother was very unhappy because I had to stay in Woodlands. She said her hair turned white overnight. My Mom and Dad and their friends visited me all the time. Then my Dad died. I’m not sure how old he was at the time.

The girl patients on B Ward fed me; they took turns. I sat in a wooden chair for my meals; the food was okay. But I had to eventually move from B Ward after about 5 years. I was getting too heavy for the girls to carry.

The war was scary for me because of all the blackouts. Everyone had to be in bed early by six o’clock; then they put all the lights out. The worst thing was that we had no idea why the lights were put out so early. No one had explained the blackouts to us so we were all terrified.

When I was in Woodlands, I would go to the Occupational Therapy room, and there I learned to weave. I used to make lots of bath mats; some of these mats were used in Woodlands, and the rest I would sell to the staff.

I was eventually moved to H Ward. It was much worse than B ward, and my friends were not allowed to visit me. I really missed them. H Ward was sometimes nice and sometimes cruel. They did not have any chairs so I was put on a blanket on the floor and had to lie there all day. All my meals were mixed up in one bowl: soup, main meal and dessert. And I was fed while lying on the floor. They had no wheelchairs or very little equipment of any kind.

I stayed at Woodlands until 1961. I had been there since 1940, so I was 26 years old when a doctor from Pearson Hospital came and asked us if we wanted to go to there. I liked the idea of moving and a new phase in my life started.

At Pearson is where I first got interested in plants. One of the Occupational Therapists at Pearson gave me my first plant and I kept it in my room; it was a very little one. I started to get my own plants, and I eventually had forty or fifty plants.

I met Jim Latham, an orderly at Pearson Hospital, and we became the best of friends. He treated me like his own son, and we used to have long discussions together, and we decided that when Jim retired he would build us a log home in the

Okanagan. He did as we had planned and on his retirement he went up to Osoyoos, BC and built us a beautiful home.

Before we moved to Osoyoos, Jim bought me an electric wheelchair and had it sent up to us. There was a small vegetable store nearby, and we used to go down there every day. We had everything we needed: a real home.

After we had been at Osoyoos for about five months, Jim became ill. One morning Jim came into my room and told me we had to go back to Vancouver. When he brought me back to Pearson, Jim told me he would be up to see me, but he never came. A short time later, the doctor came to say that Jim had passed away. Jim had committed suicide because he knew he was dying from kidney cancer. I cried for many weeks.

In 1976, I moved to False Creek Residence, where I had a garden outside my room which I got a great deal of enjoyment from. I also learned to paint

with a special head apparatus with a paintbrush attached to it. A few of my paintings are displayed on the walls of the residence.

This is Sunset, one of my paintings (above) and how I paint (below), which takes a little bit of patience.

After 36 years I returned to Woodlands to visit and was given a letter that my mother had written the day (April 7, 1940) I was left at Woodlands -- a letter I never knew existed. The heading of the letter reads, "To Those In Whose Hands God Has Placed My Darling Son."

I moved to Poplar Grove (a North Okanagan Handicap Association group home) in 1993 and that is where I am currently living.

I am tired of living in group homes, and what I would like is my own "normal" apartment or house. I know it is next to impossible, but it is my dream.
