I have LD/ADD. My life has been a succession of blunders, apologies, and attempts to fit into a conformist society.

In July of 1997, my employer, a large Rehab.Center in Pennsylvania, gave my partner and I a written warning for being discourteous to our supervisor. The cause of this warning was because in April I requested, as stated in ICF-MR (where our funding comes from) regulations, that the supervisor assist with job duties such as the driving van, due to my visual perception problem. I get left and right mixed up, can not judge distance when I help out with client needs.

My partner and I were basically set up, and, when neither the union nor upper management refused to hear our plea that we were innocent of all charges, we went to the Pa. Human Relations. I filed under disability discrimination; my partner filed under racial, age discrimination.

In order for my claim to be processed, I had to prove my disability. This was no big deal. I had a concussion at work in '95', so I sent a copy of my neuro-psych exam, which stated that I had been born with neurological problems and it was not known if head injury had caused anymore brain damage.

I filed all my paperwork, but, unlike my partner, I did not get a lawyer for monetary damage. The main thing that stopped me was a positive force in my life which would have been viewed as negative. I attended Vanguard School, a private special-ed school in Southeastern Pa. for high school. To use Vanguard and my disability in a negative way -- like "I am another poor victim" -- would have been wrong. I am proud of Vanguard and thankful I was sent there. I realized my disability should be looked at in a positive way, not negative.

So here I am: highly in debt, no lawsuit filed. But I am as happy as a pig in mud.
