I don't know if this story really applies, but I'd like to send it anyway. When I was about 13 years old I attended a camp in Malibu, California. While I was up at this camp, there was another camper (about my age) who had some severe mental challenges. I thought that he was great and fun to be around; but I couldn't figure out why he was kept seperate from the other campers. The counselors told me that he was special. I said, "SO?" They usually just looked at me.
When it was my free camp time, I would often seek him out. None of my other camper friends wanted to come with me. The last night of camp...we had a big dance and I invited him to be my date. The other campers were very surprized that I would ask a boy with mental retardation to be my date. I looked at them oddly and told them that I was honored that he accepted because he was such a wonderful person and really knew how to enjoy life.
Within the same year...I went to a family reunion and met a cousin with mental retardation. I still couldn't figure out why the other family members (not his immediate family) and friends chose not to talk to him. Although I hung out with my cousins, I still spent time with Howard.
It is because of Howard that persued my career into special education as a teacher for those students who have severe developmental challenges.
