Story

We still face so many restrictions and limitations because of our disabilities today in the Community Based Program. Even when they don't have jurisdiction, there are still staff controls on our lives.

My Community Support Coordinator was very upset just because I have put a down payment on that Office Black Leather Chair and still upset because I have another layaway don't on my RonCole Oven. My Support Coordinator is upset because I am purchasing a new oven toaster. She is trying to run my life and I am not very happy about it. They tell me what I can spend and what I can't spend. They took my rights to have my own debit card on me, and I am very upset and I am very hurt. I don't like the system because it labels many of us with disabilities.

Then the staff did not like it when I choose to move from Concord to Salem in the mid-1990s. They was very much against it. I've lived in Salem for fours years now and I am very happy.

We need to make Self-Determination a reality now. The community is no different then it was at Laconia State School & Training Center. The system needs to change the way it thinks about persons with disabilities.
