Hamster Girl said it perfectly, and I'd like to contribute the letter I wrote to our local daily paper, The Welland Tribune, on January 22 this year, shortly after Mr. Latimer was sent to prison.

To the Editor:

I applaud the Supreme Court's (of Canada) decision to deny leniency in the case of Robert Latimer. Killing a human being, any human being is wrong whether one thinks it is doing it for the right reasons or not.

What I find chilling in Mr. Latimer's response is that he totally doesn't get it. He thinks he is morally right for what he is doing, that it is a "corrupt judicial system" that is out to get him personally and that "any right thinking human being would do exactly as I did."

This is totally frightening! In my eyes it, puts him right up there with Karla Homolka, Paul Bernardo, Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dahmer and the rest of the murderers. No remorse, just a cold calculating "I'm-right-to-do-this-and-the-rest-of-you-are-wrong "attitude. Narcissm to the max. It wasn't about Tracy at all; it was about HIM and HIS pain at having a so profoundly disabled child.

The other thing that frightens me, as a person with a disability, is that Mr. Latimer will be turned into a martyr by the right wing political parties to further justify their laments against the Charter of Rights and Freedom and the judicial system.

People with disabilities or who those are vulnerable, are INDEED citizens of Canada and, therefore, have the same rights as those who are not disabled or vulnerable and NO ONE has the right to take us out just because in their eyes "we're in pain and they are saving us from it." Thank you, Supreme Court of Canada.

Yes, there are petitions and ribbons going up to "free Robert Latimer" all over the place, but perhaps the world can help us to ensure this doesn't happen -- that he serves his 10-year minimum sentence. You can contact the Justice Minister, the Honourable Anne Mclellan, by going to Yahoo.ca and clicking on federal government and then looking for the justice minister's e-mail.

Years ago, we in the world helped to feed children in Africa. Maybe the same spirit can keep Robert Latimer in jail for what was a gutless crime to ease his own pain.
