Hi, my name is Jo Ann. I have six children. My last child to be born is John. John was the healthiest, weighed the most of all my children. After he came home from the hospital, he, for what reason I don't know, started losing weight! Too much weight. So, out of concern, I took him back to his doctor.
It was like a nightmare! He stayed in the hospital for 30 days. He went through all kind of testing. Finally the doctors diagnosed him with a meningitis type disease. When he came home, he had a low immune system but improved.
I did not know my son was autistic until he started school. Maybe I would have seen the signs sooner, but his father passed away in1980 with cancer. I had my hands full with taking care of my late husband and six children! Also my oldest child is deaf.
But, to make a long story short; my son grew into a fine young man. He graduated, came out of his shyness by working with a company for four years. He is so caring, kindhearted.
My son is grown now; he is still facing many problems! You see, the company he worked with for so long had a great manager! While this manager was recuperating from surgery, another one came in and took over. This person's attitude toward the handicapped was different! This person thought the handicapped were not productive enough for the company -- even though my son had been with them for four years. He was well respected, loved and liked by many customers. We filed charges; my son won!
I do know from experience society can be cruel. My son has tried other jobs, but, so far, most places just let him do what they do not want to do. Or they will not let him do what his capabilities are!
So, as parents,we have got to take a stand and let society know these special-needs people deserve a place in society as much as anyone else. My heart cries for these young adults! I know GOD has put me here for a purpose, and one is to stand up for the handicapped! Thank You.
