As an undergraduate, I majored in philosophy, religion, and history. I only felt the outsider in philosophy -- and that's the area in which I went to graduate school!
Religion majors were few and far between. In fact, I was the last to graduate from Wichita State with a religion major; it was dropped to an "area of study." When you're the only one, it's hard to feel neither included or excluded. There were many history majors, and the lounge was virtually never used by students. I believe it was just there for coffee. Philosophy was different.
Philosophy and history are in the same building. Being the first dormitory west of the Mississippi with indoor plumbing, it's not accessible. I was always told that nothing ever happened in the lounge. I knew it was a lie. I think, deep down, they, too, knew it was a lie. Knowing something and acknowledging that something are two very different things. As my father said, "They don't know what they're not missing."
It was true. There was a discussion on the value of one's GPA over one's GRE score. People came out to say hi before quickly returning to the lounge to "rejoin the debate." I was merely decoration.
There were twelve students ready to take advanced logic theory -- usually a graduate level class. As the class filed into the seminar room, a lively discussion was in process. Class began with the lecture ... a lecture based upon the arguments that and proofs discussed in the lounge where "nothing ever happens." True, nothing planned ever happens; it's all spontaneous, but that doesn't mean nothing happens. Where do you think the end of semester party takes place? If I'm not taking a philosophy course that semester, I get a call the morning of the event ... if at all.
Despite all this, it's my duty to bring the desert to the fall and spring philosophy picnics as I can make some kick-ass desserts. Why I went remained a mystery ... until now.
