Story

I didn't feel "disabled" until society made me feel disabled. Free as a bird in my wheelchair, I am not handicapped until confronted with an Able Body Supremacist attitude.

In his story, Living with Hate, Victor speaks of ethnic heritage as the motivator for handicapping treatment by others. It made me sad to read, "I live in a town where if you are of my ethnic background you are subject to abuse every day."

We who have been treated abusively because of our disabilities can feel empathy for Victor. Even as we reach for the stars, we are often hampered by those who would not see us achieve.

Nevertheless, we must find within ourselves the courage to forge ahead. We must, as Victor must, work for the day when our reach exceeds our grasp only because of our passion to find the next bright star.

Victor will only be with us for the duration of one life span. Society has but one opportunity to cheer him on and treat him with value. There has never existed this particular Victor before, and once he is gone, we will never have this chance again.
