I live with the process of hate every day. I live in a town where if you are of my ethnic background, you are subject to abuse every day. The abuse is often times subtle, yet it is a constant attack.
When I was a child in school, people like myself would live the insults, the constant suspicious looks when in public locations, and the constant stalking and intimidation while in that location. Today in this town, there is very little change other than my expressing this belief to you is putting me in harm's way. I live with the constant challenge of getting an education and maintaining a constant attitude that the insults -- both physical and emotional -- are surmountable.
At times I feel that I don't want to be a witness, then I look at the people who have walked before me through similar trails, and their constant steadfastness inspires me to do the same for others much less fortunate than me. I attend a college where many times I have lost locks, and I am forever addressed with a condescending manner. Some teachers have stated that I should not even be in the school. From day to day, I don't know where the physical attack may come from. Yet I am aware that it is a real possibility.
The public transportation that I take is very much a part of that threat. On a regular basis, the employees will take my ticket, then two minutes later will attempt to collect twice. The school I attend continues to deny Internet access and information. Their response is that you should buy your own computer. The library that I attend is constant with the walking around, and making sure that certain types of people do not have complete access to facilities. There are times on the public transportation platform that I listen to the attitude that this is right and just.
I truly wonder why I have had so much faith in this system.
