story

While I've had impairments most of my adult life, I've only identified as "disabled" since 1990.

Years earlier, I became friends with someone was totally blind. She was also totally witty, and sly and smart, and we had great fun volunteering together, sharing a house, and eventually, working together in a business. We both loved to cook and eat.

Many times I'd watch her working in the kitchen, and I just couldn't hold my tongue. "Why don't you do it *this* way?" I'd ask, moving in like an Angel of Mercy. I was so full of my ideas, and my need to be helpful, that I didn't have room to notice what she was doing. She would politely change the subject, letting me know that her way was just fine.

Fifteen years later, I'm dicing carrots. Both my hands are in splints, one arm is about 25% useful, and the routine task at hand has become an entirely new proposition. It takes me around 20 minutes to dice those carrots, but I realize that those were *my* 20 minutes, and I was able to do it, and that was what was important.

I think back to bossy me in the kitchen I shared with my blind friend. What an idiot I'd been! I sent a prayer her way thanking her for her patience with my able-bodied arrogance, and for a lesson I'd taken so long to learn.
