I have been labled disabled for only 2 1/2 years now. Maybe I haven't been around long enough or I should thank my lucky stars. Funny though, it seems I hear better than I ever did as a part of the mainstream.

Defining it is hard because I am not sure this fits your question of how I did not allow some one to use my disability as an excuse to break up. It is about not letting my disability become an excuse to get involved with some one I did not love. People close to me all gave me perfect excuses (their loving advice) for why I should get involved with him like: "You know with your problems.....take what you can get...others will not find your scars so sexy.....you are so picky... he will give you anything...do anything for you..."

They could not see why I could not fall in love with a man who would cater to me. I did not see the fact he was so willing to do everything and anything for me as a love connection. Course I fear that I will never meet my soul mate and to a lot of men I will be too much of a reality check. I would rather die an old maid who tried to find a soul mate -- a mate who sees me as a working partner of a relationship -- than marry a man who felt sorry for me.

So you see I did not allow myself to use my disability as an excuse to reject the idea that I can find my prince just like anyone else. It might take longer, but who's in a rush? Like fine wine, it betters with age.
