I am a psychiatric nurse appalled at my profession but still with hope that I might be able to change it after years of bashing my head up against a brick wall.

I do not fit in with the key-swinging-from-the-hip, jailer-type nurse who believes that the patient is 'them' and we the nurses are 'us' and that somehow, because you are the patient, I can do what I like to you because the consultant has agreed that this plan of care is acceptable to society.

I am sure that if society came in and had a look at what is going on and saw the reality with their own eyes they would not agree to it either. But somehow we are told that these treatments are acceptable.

Drugs, ECT, behaviour modification, etc., etc., etc. are all fancy names for intimidation. Then we treat people like animals and expect them to respond as human beings, and, when they don't, it’s just further proof that we can employ these barbaric treatments again and that I'm wrong and naive to believe that it could be any different.

But I really would like to know what can be done to change because it seems there are more of them than there are of those who want to change it. I'm sure, very sure, there are others who feel saddened by what they see going on, but I don't hear them voicing concerns.

Maybe I'm talking to the wrong people. When I brought my concerns to my managers, they swept them under the carpet and then accused me of being a 'trouble maker' and being on a 'witch hunt.' But I really did not come into psychiatric nursing to treat people this way, and I feel helpless and feel my only recourse is to leave, if I can't change anything.

Got any advice?

(I wrote this after coming home from a shift on a brain injury unit that uses a token economy approach. I was so disheartened I just had to get a very small part of it off my chest.

(I have worked across most specialties in psychiatric nursing and am so disheartened by most of what I see. I don't want to be self righteous in my condemnation, but, sometimes when I finish work, I feel as though I have just left Dante's hell. That is not because of the patients I nurse but some of the 'so called' techniques I see being implemented.

(What I wrote to you was just the tip of an iceberg but all I had the energy to write down before I went to bed in an attempt to protect my own sanity.)
