I had the unfortunate experience to have to be taken to the hospital not so long ago by my husband because of a problem I was having with my stomach (severe bloating, severe pain). When we got there, I happened to notice the specialist who had done all the tests on me, so I pointed him out to my husband. My husband went in behind the nurse's station and politely asked to speak to him. He took my husband to one side, and my husband explained that it was a nightmare for me and our family with this problem I am having.
The specialist said to him, "As I told your wife, there is nothing that I can do for her, she has MS, and it is affecting her stomach muscles". End of discussion!
My husband got me booked in at emergency, and I awaited, firstly for a nurse (an hour), who came to the bed, whipped the drapes closed and THREW A GOWN AT ME, saying as she walked away, "Get into that." I was lying there in severe pain, (my husband had gone to park the car) and was unable to help myself. I got angry (and threw the gown back out).
As the nurse walked back, she noticed the gown on the floor, picked it up and came in and said, "I thought I told you to get into that."
I said, "Don't ever throw anything at me again, I need some help to get into this hospital gown."
The nurse said, "I did not throw the gown, and how would you know anyway -- you are in severe pain and you have Multiple Sclerosis."
I lost it! I told her to take her attitude and herself out of there and get me the nurse manager. She left but not before saying, "I am going to tell the doctor this."
My husband finally came in and I was in tears. He helped me with the gown, and by then another nurse had come. She was wonderful. After a two-hour wait, the emergency doctor came to see me. He said that the specialist had to leave, but he had the results of all my tests and repeated what I had already been told.
He said, "I can give you something for pain, make you comfortable and send you home; please come back if you're in pain again."
I mentioned the treatment I had gotten from the nurse, and he said in a patronizing way that he would speak to her. I asked my own doctor for a second opinion about my stomach, and, after some pleading and begging, I was referred to another stomach specialist. After several different tests, including an MRI of the stomach, it appears I have Diverticulitis, and I am being treated for this.
So several points I am trying to make here:
1. Why, because we have a disability, are we treated so poorly at times?
2. Why do some doctors blame every oter medical problem you have on "your
disability" -- in this case multiple sclerosis?
I don't always have the strength to pursue medical injustice, and I don't want it to sound
as if every little thing makes me mad. I am aware, here in Canada, that our nurses and
doctors are overworked. I truly sympathize with them. All I ask is that I be treated as a
normal individual -- with respect and dignity, the same I accord other people.
